Snowcastle

Second place - used to be on Nesters - very funky house built by artist. Tragedy when it burned later... Here's a story I wrote about it.. The Snowcastle Whistler seems to attract free spirits who express their individuality in a myriad of ways. Usually it's manifested in the realm of the physical - Whistler is certainly full of very skilled athletes pursuing the perfect turn, the perfect drive, the perfect line... Less obviously it is also manifested in mental pursuits - Whistler is comprised of an interesting mix of personal philosophies and philosophers. In various places around Whistler this free spiritedness is reflected in architecture - in the kinds of dwellings people design to live in. Contrast the expensive Nicklaus North properties to the squats by the Green River. The residents of each are obviously making rather different statements. There are some beautiful houses scattered around the valley, not always in the posher subdivisions. Some of the most interesting houses are sited in obscure locations. Many have been around for a while. Often it's the older houses that are more interesting, perhaps because of their age. When someone buys a lot for $400,000 they're unlikely to build an A-frame on it but back in the late '60's and early '70's when lots sold for high four and very low five figures houses were much more modestly conceived. Still, some of the early builders designed some rather interesting dwellings. Seppo's house comes to mind. The house is living history consisting as it does of materials that used to belong in other structures including schools and Toad Hall. Zube's houses are renowned for their funkiness. The Tram House was an interesting design and offered residents over the years a killer view. One of the more distinctive houses built in a much younger Whistler disappeared years ago but it was so unusual it's worth a tour. The Snowcastle once sat on a very steep gully on Nester's, near the Ski Boot end of the road, on the side furthest from the highway. It stood to the left of the gothic arch. The Snowcastle was basically a simple A-frame. Because it was built on very steep terrain it didn't look very big from the road, but it rose four stories in the back. The owner had packed a lot of unique building into those four stories. There were hints from the outside that the house was different.A four foot high cedar post with 'Snowcastle' engraved in it identified the house from the road. Visitors had to cross a short bridge to get to the front door which was painted in broad white and black stripes. The heavy door was contoured much like an airplane door and worked on a counterweight. It opened into a small hall. The first impression visitors got of the main level was the unusual colour scheme - everything was black and red. Naughahyde seemed to be everywhere. A small kitchen with a breakfast nook lay to the left of the hall. The wood was dark and shiny around the breakfast nook. Beyond it lay a large living area. Uncomfortable wooden benches lined the living room. Big rough interior vertical beams broke up the slanting walls which seemed to be made of painted chipboard. The view out the big windows in the back revealed just how steeply the land dropped away from the road. The main floor was slightly below street level in the front, eighty feet or so up in the back. Tight circular stairs led through the floor between the kitchen and the living room. The only handrail was a chain tacked to the vertical posts. The stairs opened up on a huge room down below that pretty well ran the full length and width of the house. Before the stairs finished in the lower story they passed the master bathroom. This room took the term throne as toilet literally - the ceramic utensil was encased in a heavy wooden ...throne complete with an engraved and embellished back and sturdy wooden armrests. The floor of the bathroom was made of cedar rounds fastened to a subfloor. Anything small dropped on that floor was gone forever. The sink was an old-fashioned beauty. The room was finished in dark woods . The big rumpus room was perhaps thirty-five feet long, fifteen feet wide, with a fourteen foot ceiling. It might have been a fairly normal room if it weren't for a huge painting of a naked woman lying on an ice-berg that ran along one wall. The wall itself had been painted with this huge image. The artist had painted her from the rear (literally) although her head was turned and she appeared to be looking into the room. It was generally believed she was the cabin-owner's wife or girl-friend. There was a hatch in the floor of this big room that led into a rather claustrophobic pit that held four bunk-beds. The cabin dwellers who slept in those beds had to drop into their room to get to bed. It was impossible to sleep down there if anything was happening on the floor above. There was absolutely no soundproofing. There was a hatch on the outside
